This unit exists to maintain facilities and support systems, assure that the facilities and support systems are maintained according to all applicable regulatory standards', provides a safe sanitary environment for clients and staff. Meet the facilities needs of the Department of Human Services Southern Region customers. Manage available resources to provide a physical environment at the highest quality possible.

Facilities served are: CMHIP, DOC, PRC, and DYC (Zeb Pike, Spring Creek and Pueblo Youth Services Center) and the four nursing homes in the southern district. Total Facilities are approximately 2 million sq. ft. at multiple sites in over 100 buildings.

Description of Job

What You'll be Doing

Maintain all facility systems on Second Shift 4 PM till 12 AM Thursday and Friday and 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. These hours are subject to change based on customer needs) in a complete and thorough journeyman like manner; using proper procedures, tools and equipment. Perform routine and preventative maintenance as required for plumbing systems, mechanical and HVAC systems and architectural features and components. Repair systems and components damaged by abuse or normal wear and tear to maintain the facility functions and therapeutic environment.

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Perform general routine maintenance functions in all Southern District Facilities.

  • Respond to work requests phoned into the maintenance dispatch desk during normal operating and after hours.

  • Inspect the facilities and generate work orders for necessary repairs such as burnt out lights, leaking faucets, loose hinges and all types of damage caused by patients and staff.

  • Troubleshoot, repair, maintain, adjust and make minor repairs to various types of locks i.e. penal, residential, and commercial grade locks

  • Snake plugged sanitary lines using appropriate equipment, to include but not limited to unplugging stools, urinals, sinks, floor drains and main sewer lines.

  • Repair residential, institutional, and penal fixtures i.e. dripping faucets, running water closets, and urinals, to include but not limited to replacement of washers, seats, traps, valves, supply lines. P-traps, handles, diaphragms, vacuum breaker, molded disk.

  • Perform electrical repair, replace ballast, replace lights, repair and replace light fixtures and replace light switches.

  • Secure / repair damaged windows caused by patients.

  • Adjust door hinges to allow doors to close properly, adjust door closures.

  • Repair damage to faculties finish and systems. Repair walls, ceilings, roofs, floors and accentuated systems. Replace flooring material and coverings, including floor tile, sheet goods, wall base and accessories, repair cabinet and counter tops to include millwork hardware.

  • Apply paint to walls surfaces, doors, casings, caseworks, gym floors, mechanical room, handrails bollards, by spraying, brushing, rolling.

  • Parking lot striping.

  • In a professional and timely manner.

  • Perform routine and scheduled snow removal, also apply ice melt as needed.

  • Making sure work is done properly and to high standard of excellence.

  • Assist other trades as necessary.

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications

Four years of progressively responsible experience in the structural trades appropriate to the work assignment (including carpentry, electrical, painting, lock-smithing). Part time experience will be pro-rated.


Successful completion of a formalized apprenticeship program or higher level course work from an accredited, non-correspondence, vocational or trades school in electrical, plumbing, or HVAC/R, may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

The following supplemental experience, competencies and abilities are highly desirable for this position and may be considered in selecting the successful candidate:

  • Knowledge of the tools used in this occupation (i.e.voltage meters, tube benders, pipe cutters, hand held snakes, etc.)

  • Knowledge of technology used in this occupation (electronic locks, appliances, etc.)

  • Knowledge of hazardous material, protective clothing and storing,

  • Oral communication/comprehension, active listening, critical thinking, reading comprehension, coordination, judgment/decision making and problem solving skills.

  • Customer service skills

  • Attention to detail

  • Organizing, planning and prioritizing work

  • Processing of information (compiling, categorizing, tabulating, auditing, or verifying information or data)

  • Manual Dexterity, performing general physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving of your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping and handling of materials.

Conditions of Employment

The successful candidate in this position will be willing and available to submit to the following conditions:

  • Pre-employment Physical – post offer screening to include dynamic strength testing, eye exam and physical - All job offers are contingent on a successful physical exam which also includes a lift and range of motion test provided by a designated health care professional, certifying candidate's ability to perform the essential functions of the position.   • Must will be willing to submit to and able to successfully pass a criminal background check, pre-employment drug screening, and pre-employment physical examination.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado driver's license and be able to travel independently throughout Colorado using personal transportation or a state vehicle.

  • Essential Services Designation - Must be available for call back to perform essential and/or emergency services of the agency without delay or interruption.

  • Must be available for shift work. (24 hour a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year operation).

  • Must be available for call backs after hours on any day.

  • A Tuberculosis (TB) Test will be required upon hire.

  • Must be willing to receive an annual influenza vaccination or provide documentation for a medical or religious exemption at the time of hire.

  • Must be able to lift in excess of 50 lbs. of force frequently and/or in excess of 20 lbs. of force constantly.

  • Must be able to perform frequently a level of physical exertion which includes climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling and reaching.
