Position Description:

Position Summary :

Coordinate electrical projects within the Electrical Department to ensure a safe, reliable and cost effective power distribution system and computer control system. This includes the design, installation and maintenance of the power distribution system(s) and the design, software development, installation and maintenance of the various control systems utilized at the mine. The areas of responsibility include the Power Distribution System, Conveyor System, Longwall, Ventilation, Dewatering System, Mine Water System, Preparation Facility and Train/Truck Loadout.


  • Be a key driver in the mine safety program which includes the following:

  • Mandate the use of Peer to Peer Observations and Risk Assessments within the Electrical Department.

  • Take the lead role in investigating any accident occurring in the Electrical Department and participate in other investigations as required/requested.

  • Provide a leading role during the annual safety audit as well as participating in Peabody “Management of Change Processes”.

  • Ensure all functions of the Electrical Department as well the departments responsibilities comply with CFR 30 and the NEC.

  • Specific job related skills and certifications

  • Proficient in PLC Ladder Logic, specifically Rockwell PLC 5 and Control Logix 5000.

  • Mining Electrical Experience = 5 years minimum.

  • Certifications (Mine Foreman, MSHA Electrical cards and Trainers Card (preferred))

  • Ability to read, explain and develop electrical prints and schematics.

  • Have a thorough understanding of the CFR Part 75.

  • Proficient with SAP, Kronos, AutoCad, Word and Exel is preferred.

  • Easy Power- Power system analysis software or equivalent.

  • Provide continuous improvement skills not only in the Electrical Department but the entire mine to enhance safety, improve productivity and efficiency and reduce costs.

  • Possess a mechanical understanding of all underground mining equipment and processes and Power systems.

Department Immediate/Ongoing Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Help develop and teach others in the department to assemble specifications for new equipment purchases and projects as well as rebuilds of existing equipment.

  • Oversee and coordinate the department’s collaboration with other departments on electrical responsibilities for day to day operations as well as ongoing projects.

  • Oversee the department’s involvement with Venders and MSHA personnel on equipment approvals.

  • Manage, plan and assign shift electrical foreman on assigning crew tasks.

  • Oversee the department’s involvement with MSHA inspectors to reduce MSHA compliance issues.

  • Collaborate with the engineering department and accounting department to develop an annual budget that includes the department’s operating/maintenance cost as well as capital requirements.

  • Catalog and order parts through SAP for projects and department needs. This will include teaching and developing others to perform this task as well.

  • Ensure that the department and other departments update and maintain mine electrical maps and comply with MSHA electrical required responsibilities.

  • Coordinate and oversee the annual electrical retraining and new electrician certification training.

  • Coordinate the installation and maintenance of the Minesite Tracking system at the mine. Work with IT and the facility technicians group to ensure the tracking system is monitored per MSHA requirements and Twentymile Coal’s Emergency Response Plan.
