Douglas County Government Equipment Operator I in Castle Rock, Colorado

This is work responsible for operating and maintaining County vehicles andperforming manual labor activities.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (The following examples areillustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive.)Operates equipment including pickups, single axle trucks, tandem axletrucks, tractor-trailers, rollers, water tankers, mowers,sweepers, loaders, backhoes, excavators, snowplows, sanders, motorgraders, dozers, scrapers, paving equipment, milling machines,concrete mixers, mud jack pumps, curb machines, sprayers, and otherconstructioPerforms a variety of road maintenance tasks involving the operation of theequipment stated above and manual labor tasks, including pothole repair,concrete repair, asphalt overlays, culvert repair and maintenance,bridge repair, shoulder maintenance, ditch maintenance, shoveling,raking, fence construction, tree trimming, etc.Responds to emergency situations including, but not limited to:blizzards, fires, floods, and other disasters.Performs snow and ice removal, which includes the application of anti-icingand deicing materials.Assists with placement of traffic control signage and provides trafficflagging during construction activities.Performs daily inspection on equipment and vehicles used.Provides good customer service. Collaborates with Supervisors to respond tocustomer service requests. Required to model good customer service andadherence to the code of conduct.OTHER DUTIES:Helps ensure that all equipment is properly maintained. May perform equipmentmaintenance/fabrication.Performs manual labor using various hand tools or equipment, includingshovels, picks, jackhammers, power saws, and other tools.Paints and sandblasts structures.Installs and repairs guardrail, fencing, snow fence, culverts, andother road structures.Establishes and maintains positive and effective working relationships withthose contacted in the performance of required duties.Transports heavy machinery and vehicles to and from job locations.Required to complete at least one external training session/class. Must bea minimum of four hours.Performs miscellaneous minor maintenance work on vehicles and equipment.Collects debris along County roads.Performs other duties as assigned.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position does not directly superviseother employees.CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR: Work involves equipment operation and physical labor.Consequence of error may result in unsafe roadways and unsafe workingconditions for co-workers and the traveling public.CONTACTS: This position has daily contact with co-workers and the public.INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT: Work is often performed independently and requiresself-initiative and good judgment.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: A high school diploma or GED supplemented byone-year education or experience in highway maintenance or equipmentoperation. An equivalent combination by be considered.ACADEMIC SKILLS: Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to read andcomprehend instructions, safety rules and manuals, short correspondence,and memos and the ability to perform basic math.REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry outinstructions and deviate from those instructions if the conditions warrant.CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must possess valid State ofColorado Class "A" commercial driver's license. Ability to obtain atanker endorsement within six-months of hire.OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Knowledge of road construction and maintenancetools and equipment. Knowledge of safety factors. Work outside normal workhours is required.PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Ability to perform continuous strenuous physical labor forup to 10 hours a day. (May exceed 12 hours during times of snow removal orconstruction or emergency situations.)
