Job Summary

As the Data Center Colocation Service Manager, you will work within OIT providing colocation data center services in the Boulder campus data centers. You'll manage equipment location within various data centers to identify risks, and provide incident response and customer support. You will lead the effort for a long term rack management plan, provide project support for departmental moves and provide operational support for critical infrastructure services. You will also provide rack space and basic IT hardware maintenance, request data communication connections, and provide service support.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Colocation Service - Planning and Management

  • Leading the effort to define long-term planning requirements for the rack management plan.

  • Gathering requirements, project timelines, assuring equipment meets published data center standards.

  • Racking customer equipment into server cabinets.

  • Requesting infrastructure services, including rack power and airflow management.

  • Helping to establish and enforce policies and procedures for installation and removal of equipment.

Data Center Operations

  • Assist the Infrastructure Service Manager in the operation and maintenance of OIT’s critical facilities.

  • Monitor performance of the facility’s critical systems.

  • Install equipment cabinets, power distribution units (PDUs), and oversee maintenance activities.

Remote Hands Service Definition and Rollout

  • Perform basic hardware service and support and creating service description, documentation and service level agreements.

Construction Coordination and Contractor Oversight

  • Monitor infrastructure improvement projects and providing oversight for contractors and responding to issues as they arise and performing quality assurance observations on behalf of the University.

Service Operations

  • Respond to failures of electrical and mechanical systems; building automation/controls, data communications links, security systems, and ensuring the integrity of the building structure.

What You Should Know

This position is subject to a formal on-call rotation with definite response times, where the likelihood of the on-call employee having to come on-site to respond/manage the issue/incident is low. When not on call, this position is expected to respond in a reasonable (though not definitive) amount of time when called outside working hours regarding issues and incidents that arise.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. A combination of education and relevant work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the bachelor’s degree.

  • One year of experience in each of the following areas:

  • Operation and maintenance of critical facilities (data centers or telecommunications rooms), including operating principles for facilities designed for high availability.

  • Critical systems monitoring and alert response and as it relates to critical facility operations and uptime performance.

  • Reviewing design and construction documents related to infrastructure improvement projects.

  • Installation of computing servers into data center cabinets.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Functional knowledge of project management principles and methods.

  • Experience enforcing operating procedures and best practices for critical facilities.

  • Ability to perform a wide range of mechanical tasks.

  • Good customer-service skills, and verbal and written communications skills.

  • Experience with developing and working with Microsoft Excel.
